Rector’s Letter for Corpus Christi (Trinity 1), Sunday 19 June 2022

Dear sisters and brothers,

This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi, or the rather long-winded title of ‘The Day of Thanksgiving for the Institution of Holy Communion (Corpus Christ)’ as the Church of England lists it in the lectionary.

This is a day when we can give thanks for the gift of Holy Communion, the gift of Godself to the world to feed and sustain us. It is at the heart of our worship that we can encounter God when we break bread and drink wine. This is why it is appropriate that this Sunday we will be reintroducing the Common Cup at St Wilfrid’s (and next Sunday at the Presentation), for the gift of Holy Communion is for the whole Church. It is given to us by God for us to share with one another. To receive in one kind as we have been for the last two years is to receive the fullness of God’s grace in the Sacrament, but we have all missed the symbolic action of sharing bread and wine together.

Some may still feel uncomfortable to drink from the Common Cup. Please do not feel pressured into sharing the Communion Cup unless you are ready. But this is an important step on our worship returning to the fullness which many of us have been missing. I look forward to sharing with you all on Sunday.

With all blessings,

Fr Edward

From this Sunday we will be reinstating the Common Cup for those who wish to receive the consecrated wine.

Please do not intinct.

We will also be kneeling once again at the altar rail for those who wish to kneel to receive Holy Communion.
